Near Brussels’ Gare de Midi train station, a renowned drug-trafficking area, a shooting incident on Thursday, June 27, left two persons dead and two critically injured, according to police.
The incident happened in the Saint Gilles neighborhood of the Belgian capital, close to a cafe, between 1:00 and 2:00 in the morning. A police spokeswoman stated that the suspect left the scene of the crime.
According to the police department, three persons were hurt during the shooting; two of them have life-threatening injuries, while the third’s condition is stable.
Saint-Gilles was one of the 15 drug hotspots among the 19 municipalities in the capital that were discovered by Brussels officials during a recent crackdown on drug trafficking.
Though judicial officials were scheduled to issue a statement later on Thursday, the police have not yet established a connection between the shooting and the illegal drug trade in the city. Gun violence in Belgium has increased recently, and it has been related to conflicts between drug trafficking groups.
