Governor Gavin Newsom of California has a message for Floridians: Come to California.
Over the Fourth of July weekend, Newsom will broadcast advertising criticizing Republicans in Florida for acts like as a 15-week abortion restriction, the “Don’t Say Gay” statute, and new voting rules.
“Today is Independence Day. “Let’s speak about what’s going on in America,” Newsom says in the advertisement. “In your state, freedom is under siege.
” Newsom’s advertisement comes as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed some contentious legislation into law, including the Parental Rights in Education Act, which prohibits discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through third grade classrooms, and a 15-week abortion ban, one of the country’s most restrictive.
“Republican leaders are outlawing literature.” Making it more difficult to vote, restricting free expression in schools, and even criminalizing women and physicians,” Newsom added.
This isn’t the first time Newsom has used Florida, and notably DeSantis, to pique people’ interest. While facing a recall election in 2021, Newsom advised Republicans not to meddle with the state’s COVID rules, using the slogan “Don’t DeSantis My California.” The slogan was inspired by DeSantis’ own campaign apparel, which used the phrase “Don’t Fauci My Florida” to criticize the nation’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci.
“I urge everyone in Florida to join the battle, or to come to California, where we still believe in liberty,” Newsom added. “Freedom of Expression.” The ability to select. Liberation from hatred. And the ability to love. Don’t give up your freedom.”
