Baseball transcends mere athletics. For millions of supporters around the US, it serves as a source of pride and identification. These supporters have a strong bond with their teams, which occasionally sparks bitter rivalries and alliances between opposing fan camps.
We thought there was no better moment to bring up the long-standing discussion about which MLB team has the finest supporters than now that the new season has begun. This question’s bias is the issue. Any fan of the Cardinals will tell you that they have the greatest fan base.
In a study of more than 5,000 MLB fans, Casino.org asked explicitly which other baseball team, beyond your own, had the best and worst fan base.
The Fan Favorite: Chicago Cubs
Fans of the Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, and 12 other teams in the league (or 40%) voted the Chicago Cubs’ fan base the best. After waiting more than a century for a World Series triumph until the 2016 edition, Cubs supporters are renowned for their tenacity and fortitude. It should come as no surprise, then, that the Cubs’ devoted fan base was the primary selection factor, with the atmosphere at Wrigley Field coming in second.
Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals were the only two teams to pick the Cubs as having the worst supporters. It’s interesting to note that, despite the White Sox calling the Chicago Cubs the worst team, the White Sox supporters voted them the best.
The Least Popular: New York Yankees
The New York Yankees were chosen as the worst supporters by 14 additional fan bases (47%) than the Yankees. The most typical cause? It seems like they’re pampered and entitled. It’s understandable why other fans detest the New York Yankees given their 27 World Series victories. Their reputation for spending top bucks for elite players—which some view as “buying” their success—probably doesn’t help with this.
The San Diego Padres were the only team to rank the Yankees as having the best fan base. The Yankees’ fervor is valued by Padres supporters, despite their distance of more than 2,700 miles.
Among other MLB fan bases, the Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Cardinals fans were voted the best. The Braves and Mariners for their warmth; the Cubs for loyalty; and the Cardinals and White Sox for an amazing ballpark experience. The only team from the West Coast included on this list is the Seattle Mariners.
Conversely, the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, LA Dodgers, Houston Astros, and New York Yankees supporters were deemed the worst in the league. The Red Sox for a terrible ballpark environment, the Phillies and Dodgers for being inhospitable, and the Yankees for being pampered.
