Divine Ikubor, nicknamed Rema, has stated that he always has a studio with him and is ready to record wherever he goes.
“I am just a guy who is usually stuck in the studio,” he stated in an interview with LootLove on Apple Music’s Africa Now Radio. If I am not performing, I don’t really have anything to do. I’d be in the studio if I wasn’t performing or spending time with my family.
“Everywhere I travel, I have studio equipment in the boot of my car.” I (always) drive with a studio in the backseat. A speaker, laptop, and microphone would be in my bag if I were traveling. I may be out and about and may not return home. I may also decide to stay at a friend’s house, or simply go to the studio, hotel, or wherever I am. “I keep my gear in my car at all times.”
When asked about his experiences working with foreign artists, he said, “I am really grateful that these artistes blessed me with their vocals, and they actually all enjoyed being on my record. I would not do anything that is forced. They actually did enjoy the record. They actually kept playing it for their friends. We are all excited about the record and that’s how it is supposed to be.”
The Edo State-born singer also claimed to have been “given with the gift of sound.” “I feel like my sound is designed to open doors,” he remarked. I was given the gift of hearing, and it comes naturally to me (to do). I’m quite confident I’d leave with a banger if I walked into the studio (hit). That’s why, before I ‘attack’ a beat, the first thing I say is ‘another banger.’ I don’t care how the song turns out; I just say it and go with it.
“I did not beg to be here. I feel like I’m supposed to be here and I am meant to cause the shift of sound and to evolve the afrobeat movement in a way. I am just playing my role; I’m not overthinking it. I am just going with the flow and everything is happening organically. I am grateful for that.”
