On Monday, July 1, US President Joe Biden issued a warning, stating that the historic decision by the Supreme Court to award former President Donald Trump “absolute immunity” creates a “dangerous precedent” that the Republican would not hesitate to take advantage of if elected in November.
The Democratic front-runner for US president in 2024 stated, “This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America.”
“We are all equal in the eyes of the law. Everyone is subject to the law, including the President of the United States.
“For all practical purposes, today’s decision almost certainly means there are no limits to what a president can do,” Biden said, speaking to the media at the White House. This is a risky concept that is essentially new.
Declaring that “any president—including Donald Trump—will now be free to ignore the law,” Biden urged the populace to determine if they would like to “entrust” Trump with the presidency once more.
“The American people must decide if they want to entrust… once again, the presidency to Donald Trump, now knowing he’ll be more emboldened to do whatever he pleases, whenever he wants to do it,” he stated.
Donald Trump faces allegations of conspiring to deceive the United States and obstructing an official process, specifically the elections. He is said to have accomplished this by mobilizing his followers on January 6, 2021, to stop Congress from convening in joint session to officially recognize Biden’s electoral victory.
“Before they’re asked to vote again this year, the public has a right to know the truth about what happened on January 6,” Biden stated, adding that it is now extremely improbable due to today’s decision. It’s a grave injustice to this country’s citizens.”
Conversely, Republican Donald Trump applauded the decision. The ruling, he wrote on his social networking site Truth Social, was a “huge victory for our Constitution and democracy.”
“Today’s Historic Decision by the Supreme Court should end all of Crooked Joe Biden’s Witch Hunts against me,” he declared.
In a 6-3 decision on Monday, a panel of Supreme Court justices said that Trump, along with every other US president, is granted “absolute immunity” from prosecution for “official acts” committed while in office. They may still be charged with crimes for “unofficial acts,” it continued.
