Over 1,000 young people will gather in person and online for the political engagement to create a path ahead in the country’s current political landscape.
Mr Nonso Nnamani, the Power Shift Movement’s National Coordinator, told reporters in Enugu on Friday that the movement plans to use the next conference to actively fight for youth engagement in administration.
The Power Shift – Abuja Conference, according to Nnamani, will begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 28 at Shehu Musa Yar’adua Center.
He claimed that the conference, titled “Redefining Activism, Engagement, and Participation,” would change the face of Nigerian politics by promoting increased political participation among the general public and the youth in particular through education and awareness initiatives.
He said: “We have chosen to bring this conversation to the national stage, especially as the 2023 election draws closer, in order to raise the consciousness of the youth on the importance of political awareness and participation as a precursor for good governance in Nigeria.
“We are confident that this is an opportunity to identify with a significant number of youths from across the country as we inspire and awaken their consciousness to the historic opportunity that the 2023 elections provides for them to participate in shaping Nigeria’s future”.
The convener stated that the most significant difficulty confronting Nigerian youths in the country’s electoral and political progress was not finance, as some individuals incorrectly believe or urge.
“The real political issue with the Nigerian youths is their inability to organise themselves across the 36 states, the FCT and the 774 local government areas in the country.
“Through the conference, we want to galvanise and solidify existing youths’ structures and strategise on ways to redefine youths contributions to the political landscape that will create good governance in the country.
“As a result, adolescents must strengthen their collective capacities to engage and prepare themselves not just for the general elections in 2023, but for unambiguous political positioning within the next ten years,” he stated.
Apart from political and governance bigwigs, the convener stated that many youngsters’ socio-political activists would speak at the conference, inspiring youths to achieve greater heights.
“Hamzat Lawal, Founder, Connected Development (CODE); Khadija Okunnu-Lamidi, Founder, Slice Media Solutions; Dr Abioye Oke, Founder, Project 40TM; and Mr Mike Ogbuekwe, Special Adviser to the Enugu State Government on Agriculture will be featured on the first discussion panel session at the conference,” he said.
“The second panel session will feature Mr Samson Itodo, Executive Director of YIAGA Africa; Ndi Kato, Executive Director of Dinidari Foundation; Mr Chukwuma Okenwa, Executive Director of Leadership and Entrepreneurship Advocacy (LEAD) Network Africa, and Mr Idris Jubril, Convener, Progressive Youth Group.”
The Power Shift – Abuja conference, following the initial conference in Enugu on July 24, 2021, would be the second of its type.
The Enugu State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili, Samson Itodo, and other dignitaries spoke at the inaugural conference, which drew over 1,000 people – largely youths – in person and online.
