Andy Ruiz Jr shocked the world of boxing in an heavyweight championship encounter against the favourite Anthony Joshua on Saturday.
The unexpected 29-year-old from southern California tipped off as a 11-1 underdog, came off the floor in the third round to knock down Joshua twice before the end of the frame, then sent the former undefeated champion crashing to his canvas for a third and fourth time consecutively in the seventh round before referee Mike Griffin ended the match at the 1:27 mark.
It was no easy win for Ruiz even though Joshua might seem to have performed below his expected best but it was still a deserving victory for Ruiz who threw in all he had which was expressed in a post match interview.;
“I just feel so good, man,” said a happy Ruiz, who captured Joshua’s WBA, WBO and IBF belts in a stunner that ranks alongside the likes of Buster “Douglas vs Mike Tyson”, and “James Braddock v Max Baer” among the most surprising in the division’s centuries encounter.
Ruiz added, “This is what I have been dreaming about. This is what I have been working hard for. I can’t believe I just made my dreams come true.”
