In a joint statement, the union’s Secretary General, Oredia Destiny; Attorney General, Aninze Ekene; Assistant Secretary General, Sylvester Omoregie; and Director of Sports, Benson Osademe, accused the President of thwarting all efforts to reinstate a student who was suspended from his faculty for strange reasons.
Comrade Amadin Osazee, President of the University of Benin Students’ Union, has been subjected to a vote of no confidence for suspected misuse of authority, insubordination, severe misconduct, and carelessness of duty.
They further accused him of breaking the union’s constitution by releasing a communication on its behalf using his “personal letterhead paper” and without the signature of the Secretary General.
“The President thwarted all efforts of the Union to ensure the reinstatement of a student (name withheld) who was withdrawn for inexplicable reasons from his faculty,” the statement read.
In other words, the President refused to sign a letter requesting the Vice Chancellor’s assistance in the matter. This is in violation of the Union’s core objectives and ideals, as well as PART VI, Section 15, Subsection 4 of the Union’s Constitution. The President was absent from the “Peaceful Walk” planned by the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigerian Students, PANS, in honor of late Susan Oboh’s sad death on March 9, 2022, despite being well told.
Following that, he issued a memo, using his personal letterhead paper to speak on behalf of the executive council without the knowledge or consent of the executive members, condemning the said “Peaceful Walk” and describing it as an act of “defiance” by the Students because his permission was not obtained in support of it.
“For the sake of clarity, the so-called “Act of Defiance” lauded by the President was a nonviolent student rally that intended to alert relevant institutions to the unique issues that UNIBEN students experience.”
This explains why several members of the executive, Dean of Students, and active security personnel were all present in solidarity to ensure that serenity and order were maintained, but where was the SUG President during such a time of solidarity?! This was in violation of PART VI, Section 15 and Subsection 4 of the Constitution, as well as his oath of office (Schedule III SUG Constitution).
Recent reports show that security operations surrounding the school have improved significantly as a result of the “Peaceful Walk” that the President publicly and in writing refused to participate in.
“Furthermore, the President has consistently disobeyed the Union’s constitutional obligations by issuing a note on behalf of the Union on his ‘personal letterhead paper,’ which lacks the signature of the Secretary General. On the 15th of March, 2022, the other members of the executive council discredited and denounced one of the aforementioned memos that impliedly supported the use of ‘hazardous substances’ on students who voted him into power.
“The President rejected the notion of purchasing a printer, computer, and generator for the Union’s Secretariat, describing it as “Not Important Enough.” However, when his necessities necessitate it, he may milk the Union’s coffers. He has also frustrated all efforts made towards the effective maintenance of the Union’s Vehicle (Sienna) because he is unaffected by the fate of rigorous trekking that other members face when performing official duties, thus slowing down the Union’s activities and defeating the very purpose of purchasing it in the first place.
Remember that the President had previously referred to the Union’s Toyota Camry as his “Personal Vehicle(GIFT),” denying access to other members of the executive. This clarifies why he is unconcerned about the state of other Union’s vehicles (Sienna). The provisions of PART XI, Section 40, Subsection 1 are in conflict with this act (a).
“Like Adolf Hitler of NAZI Germany, the president suspended PART VI, Section 16, and Subsection 6 of the Constitution by imposing his will over the decisions of the executive council’s simple majority on critical topics affecting the Union as a whole.”
After meeting with the School Administration, the President makes all decisions on his own and keeps all essential information hidden from the other members of the executive council. The aforementioned clause of the constitution forbids such behavior.
“The Students’ Union Parliament did their duty by ratifying and confirming the annual budgets of union officers in accordance with the supreme constitution.” Following that, it was time for the President, as the Union’s leader, to provide the necessary assistance, ensuring that monies were correctly disbursed for the efficient operation of various offices, but No! The president began his procrastination tactics and slowed down all efforts to pass the budget.
Until now, that procedure has been put on hold as MR. President considers his options. Most importantly, we want to state categorically that this financial issue directly impacts University of Benin students, as each Officer is responsible for implementing student-centered programs in order to fulfill our electioneering pledges to the students who put us into power. For example, there will be a William Ubong Memorial Ceremony, a Legal Symposium, SUG Week, a Visionary Youth Conference, and many more.
“Without consulting the executive council, the President unilaterally removed the Director of Finance as a signatory to the Union’s account.” This contradicts PART VI, Section 16, Subsections 1 and 2, as well as PART XI, Section 40, Subsection 2. (a). If the president’s intentions are sincere, why is he conducting the activities of the Union in secrecy?
“Finally, President Amadin Foster’s authoritarian personality has contributed to burying a vast quantity of Student-related difficulties beneath the earth, and he has failed to realize that “everything that grows up was first, buried beneath.” As a result, it’s not surprising that such mustard seeds grow into a massive tree that bears unpleasant fruits. This sorrow is being written for the benefit of history and posterity.
“We conclude by stating that the ten offices that make up the Students’ Union executive council were duly elected by Uniben students on September 24, 2021, and as such, each individual office retains the right to carry out the responsibilities assigned to it without undue stampede or oppressive interference.” We, the executive council, today pass a vote of no confidence in the Students’ Union President, Comrade Amadin Osaze Foster, as a result of the above-mentioned power abuses.
“We therefore use this platform to urge all University of Benin students to prioritize safety even as the ASUU strike continues.” The Union will announce her next strike strategy as soon as possible. In addition, we wish TEAM UNIBEN continued success in the NUGA Competition.”
