The goal of the Headies Awards has always been to honor and celebrate exceptional accomplishments in the Nigerian music sector.
With ten nominations overall, Grammy Award-winning musician Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, better known by his stage name Burna Boy, is first on the list. Asake, Rema, and Simi are next, each with nine, five, and six nominations.
LEADERSHIP Sunday looks at ten Nigerian musicians who have received the most Headies Awards in this article.
1. Olamide
Olamide Nigerian hip-hop recording artist Gbenga Adedeji, better known by his stage name “Olamide,” records in both Yoruba and English. His musical career began in 2000. Despite this, he remained mostly unknown until 2011, when his song “Eni Duro” made him well-known. He has since reached the pinnacle of the Nigerian music industry’s fame.
With 15 total accolades, Olamide is the most decorated artist in the history of the Headies accolades.
2. Wizkid
Wizkid, whose real name is Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, is a singer and songwriter from Nigeria. Wizkid is a well-known performer in Africa. He is regarded as both one of the most innovative Afro-pop musicians and the most renowned and well-known Nigerian artist of all time.
In addition to winning two Best R&B/pop, two Viewer’s Choice, one Next Rated, Hip Hop World Revelation, Best Collabo, and Song of the Year awards, he has won three Artiste of the Year awards.
Wizkid has eleven awards in total.
3. Mode 9
Babatunde Olusegun Adewale, sometimes referred to as Mode9 or Modenine. He is a Nigerian rapper of English descent. On June 14, 1975, Mode9 was born in London. He is the third kid born to Osun State-born parents. He attributes his passion for hip-hop to Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five.
He co-wrote the song “Super Human” with Jamaican-American rapper Canibus in 2014. In addition to graduating from Federal Polytechnic in Bida, Niger State, Nigeria, with a degree in building technology, he attended Agboju Secondary School. Mode9 has received nine Headies in total.
4. 2Face Idibia.
Innocent Ujah Idibia popularly known as 2Baba or 2face.2baba is a Nigerian singer, musician, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, humanitarian, and activist, to say the least.He has won a total of 8 award.
5. Davido
Singer, songwriter, and record producer David Adedeji Adeleke, better known by his stage name Davido, is of Nigerian-American descent. He is among Africa’s most well-known artists.
Following the release of “Dami Duro,” the second single from his debut studio album Omo Baba Olowo, in 2012, Davido became well-known. Davido has eight headies in total.
6. MI Abaga
MI Abaga, also referred to as Jude Lamfani Abaga.He is a musical producer and rapper from Nigeria. He gained notoriety in 2006 when Jos, Nigeria, heard his song “Crowd Mentality.”
7. P-SQUARE
Peter and Paul Okoye make up the duo P-Square. The twins were born on November 18, 1981. Peter and Paul Okoye, who went by Psquare at the time, were the first artists to receive the Artist of the Year award. This was the first-ever Headies award ceremony held in Nigeria.
An quarrel on Jude Okoye’s role as their manager led to Paul and Peter Okoye’s 2017 breakup, which was attributed to their older brother. However, the brothers’ five-year estrangement was ended in November 2021, much to the joy of their followers. Together, the pair has won six Headies.
8. ASA
ASA, also known as Bukola Elemide, is a French-Nigerian singer, songwriter, and recording artist who was born on September 17, 1982. Asa was born in Paris to parents from Nigeria who were studying cinematography in France while working.
When her daughter was two years old, her family moved back to Nigeria. Asa’s father was a cameraman, thus the amazing music he had accumulated for his career became a bigger source of inspiration for her throughout the years. When Asa launched her first album, Christophe Dupouy was involved and she was signed to Naïve Records in collaboration with Cobhams Asuquo. Her first singles, “Eye Adaba” and “Jailer,” went viral. Later, Asa went back to Paris to concentrate on her musical career.
9. 9ICE
9ICE, Also referred to as Alaexander, Alexander Abolore Adegbola Akande was born on January 17, 1980.He is a multi-award-winning Nigerian musician renowned for his proverbial lyrics, variety, and skillful usage of the Yoruba language in his music.
and distinct musical approach that has distinguished him from the majority of musicians in his genre. Several of 9ice’s most well-known songs, including “Little Money,” “Make Dem Talk,” and “Gongo Aso,” have garnered him recognition. Nineice has won five Headies in total.
10. Wande Cole
Wande Oluwatobi Coal Born on October 18, 1985, Wande Ojosipe is more commonly referred to as “Wande Cole.” Wande Coal began participating in his church’s adolescent choir. As a dancer, he received his initial break in the Nigerian entertainment scene.Wande Coal has won seven Headies in total.
